Suicide? Blame the sun

When the word “suicide” comes to mind, usually it isn’t followed by pictures of blue skies and a bright yellow sun nudged between two puffy white clouds. Instead, and it would only seem logical, to picture dark, hazy skies with a side of thunder and rain. Suicide only happens on insidiously dark days and nights, right? Wrong. Actually, as Swedish researchers have come to discover, suicides may be just as common, if not more so, on long summer days.

It’s in places like Greenland where the sun doesn’t set in the summertime, where many people face insomnia, which can drive a person to suicide.

Recent spike in births to unmarried mothers

With as much new material as Maury Povich is able to find for his “Who’s My Baby’s Daddy” series – one of the most popular programs on daytime television – it might not be surprising to discover that births to unmarried women in the U.S. has been sharply rising in recent years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that about 40 percent of all U.S. mothers are unwed. This number might seem high; however, a new U.S. report on births shows that the U.S. is still far behind northern European countries.

The award for leader in unwed mothers giving birth goes to Iceland, with six in 10 births among unmarried women. Following closely behind are Sweden and Norway. About half of their births are to unwed mothers.

According to the CDC, France, Denmark and the United Kingdom also have higher percentages than the United States.

Top 10 hidden meanings in company logos

It may be difficult to believe, but thousands of logos and other graphic images that bombard us on a daily basis – from the flat screen monitors at your local grocery store or Best Buy to the annoying flashy ads that appear on the sides of many of the Web sites you visit – are filled with hidden meaning, and sometimes literally. Maybe you’ve noticed some of these before and maybe not. 1. Body Wisdom

This graphic image features two outwardly pointing hands joined together at the wrists. Between the ends of the palms comes a point, outlining a nose-like shape and the two white circles in the center make the shape of eyes with black pupils. Body Wisdom is a high-end day spa. The hidden meaning is between the hands, so to speak, signifying a relaxation message through the owl-like eyes, which also convey wisdom.

Making Mary J. legal

The idea of legalizing marijuana in the U.S. has been floating in the air for decades. Now that the economy is in the toilet trying to maintain its grip for another impending flush, legislatures are seeking any possible way to raise money.

According to a report on Fox News, Democratic state Assemblyman Tom Ammiano says that legalizing marijuana for adults over the age of 21 and taxing it at $50 an ounce could bring a state more than $1 billion a year.

Will $1 billion make much of a difference? Well, that’s just the tax money that could be raised from legalization. What about all the money that could be saved?

Asians want to look…whiter?

Yesterday was the first time in three years something more interesting than a pulled muscle happened to me at the gym.

It started a few weeks ago when I first noticed that one of the girls I attended a weekly Pilate’s class with just stopped showing up. I noticed her because she was one of the few women at my all-women’s gym that wasn’t overweight, age 50, or attending an intense core workout class clad in a flowery pink moo-moo.

I have to admit, I had grown to envy this girl’s beauty, mostly because she looked so different than me. She was a beautiful Asian girl with pin straight black hair, exotic dark eyes and a perfectly even skin tone; no fake bake orange or burning fluorescent tanning beds required.

She had never missed a class before. So I knew something was up.

U.K. faces speed limiting: Is U.S. next?

The U.K. could soon see thousands of its buses, taxis and other public vehicles installed with speed limiters.

I know you’re about to go back and check – if you already haven’t – to make absolutely sure you saw a “K” and not an “S” in the previously stated acronym. Either way, let me make it crystal clear that this is the United Kingdom, not the United States that the following article will be discussing in regard to the possibility of limiting the speed of all common motor vehicles.

Feel any better now? Well, maybe you shouldn’t.

The technology behind this is known as Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) and is being tested by Transport for London (the U.K.’s version of the U.S. Department of Transportation) in a trial starting this summer.
