Florida retirement community has no ethics

Ugh! The more I listen to the news here in Florida, the more I wonder why I turned it on in the first place. We certainly do have some crazy stuff going on around here, ranging from children being dumped in trash cans only to be found states away, to children being kicked out of their homes because of their age.

It’s a crazy world that we live in people! Just take a good, hard look at Florida if you ever need a reminder.

Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at the case of 6-year-old Kimberly Broffman.

Yankees on the verge of returning to the World Series

With the Yankees leading 3-1 in the ALCS over the Los Angeles Angels, it appears that next Wednesday, we can expect to see Game 1 of the World Series in the new Yankee Stadium.  Solid pitching by CC Sabathia has been the story of this Yankee post season as well as the dominating performance by one Alex Rodriguez, and both were present when the Yankees dominated Game 4 of the ALCS in a 10-1 victory.  In a series that was filled with close games and extra innings, it seems that the Yankee blowout may have been the final blow to knock down the suddenly error-prone Angels.

What did you have for dinner?: Americans’ obsession with social networking

It’s hard to remember what we did before the Internet. I think I was around 10 when we first got it. I mean, it wasn’t extensive, but it worked. It was awesome. I remember playing “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?” online.

That being said, it’s easy to agree that the Internet has BLOWN UP! We have it on our phones. We have it in little mini computers. It’s all over the place.

And what would we do without it?

Top 10 strangest phobias

I always find it interesting to learn the fears of others, things that make people cringe, shiver and shudder. Most of the time I can relate as mine are rather common: spiders, AKA arachnophobia, and dark, open water, AKA hydrophobia (sort of).

However, the list I’m about to surrender to you, Associated Content’s Top 10 Strangest Phobias, is something I can’t relate to in the least, let alone pronounce most of the names. Good luck.

Southeastern Conference kings

Florida Gators vs. Alabama Crimson Tide. The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the college football polls a week before the BCS computers start calculating ranks. One is the team that won the last BCS National Championship. The other is the team that would have won the BCS National Championship if it had not lost to the former. Who would have imagined the following season would shape up as it has, leaving both teams with paths leading back to a year ago and a repeat of the game that many say was the real national championship battle.

Boing Boing blog vs. Ralph Lauren stupidity

For years, the fashion industry has presented controversial advertisements around the world. With the development of digital imaging software like PhotoShop, the deceit becomes instantly attainable with just a click of the mouse.

Just ask Calvin Klein and now, Ralph Lauren.

High fructose corn syrup: not as evil as we thought?

I’m sure you’ve seen it. The commercial with a bunch of little kids on stage performing a third or fourth-grade play for an audience full of parents, dressed as green, red and orange vegetables and fruits. Everything is sweet and cute until suddenly, out of the corner of your eye (or screen) you notice the oozing, gross blob of a costume, known only as the recently infamous high fructose corn syrup.

Letterman scandal should be more scandalous

David Letterman has held the rating high for his late night talk show on CBS since 1993.

With his name in the tabloids this past week, Letterman appears to be benefiting from this sex scandal. Surprising?

No, that’s show-business!

In Memoriam: Sgt. Robert D. Sanchez

Someone I grew up with in grade school recently hit headlines again in our hometown.

He grew up from the kid who joked around as a goofball to everyone and even had his own share of crude nicknames we all shared for fun, into an Army Sergeant who served five tours of duty, three in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.

On Oct. 1, during combat with insurgents, he was killed by an improvised explosive device.
