David Letterman has held the rating high for his late night talk show on CBS since 1993.

With his name in the tabloids this past week, Letterman appears to be benefiting from this sex scandal. Surprising?

No, that’s show-business!

On Thursday, Letterman announced that he is a “victim of extortion attempt over charges of sexual affairs with staff members,” according to the New York Times.

Letterman says that about three weeks ago he received a package from Robert “Joe” Halderman, a producer for the CBS documentary news program 48 Hours. Halderman was threatening a screenplay outlining the “terrible, terrible things” that Letterman had done. He also asked for $2 million.

These “terrible, terrible thing” that Halderman was talking about are the many affairs that Letterman had with his female co-workers. (Doesn’t he know that office romances are never a good idea?!)

Letterman went straight to Manhattan’s district attorney where he was advised to write a fraudent check to Halderman. Now, Halderman is facing attempted grand larceny charges.

———-

Who is the wrong here?

Sure, Halderman could have been bribing Letterman just for the money. But… I really doubt he needed the money. I’m assuming this whole attempt was just to raise awareness about how much of a creep Mr. Letterman is.

Letterman has been with (now) wife, Regina Lasko, for around 20 years and they have a six-year-old son. Undeniably, his actions are unacceptable. Letterman apologized to Lasko during a taping of his show on Monday.

He told People magazine that she is “hurt.”

What a surprise! He’s lucky that his son doesn’t understand what’s going on or else he would also be ashamed of his father.

The worst part of this story is that the American public seems to have no problem with the situation at all. The top story surrounding the David Letterman scandal reads, “David Letterman Scandal will help CBS“… scary.

According to the United Press International, a study was conducted by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com Web site Oct. 1-2 to obtain viewers’ opinions of the late-night talk-show host. This study of about 500 viewers, 55 percent said that their views of Letterman were not changed whatsoever. 22 percent of respondents said yes, they have a more negative perception of him now, and 23 percent said yes, they have a more positive perception of him now.

Um… does this sound right?

Why is the question: “Where are America’s ethics?” considered a stupid question?

The shame that should be surrounding this scandal is nowhere to be found. Five minutes after Letterman admitted what should have ruined his career, he was making jokes and amusing the studio audience.

Maybe the shock was edited out.

Apparently we are a predictable nation. Adultery? Sure, no problem! We will get REALLY pissed off at you though if you’re not living a “Green” life.
Save your environment, but don’t worry about your dignity.

Halderman is facing up to 15 years for bringing this trashy situation into the limelight.

Although Letterman is laughing it off, we shouldn’t be.

Oh yay. Another story that’s taken the news by storm… And is continuing to do so. This time, however, it’s not a dead pop king, but someone who claims to steal that title someday soon (because it’s his turn), just like a certain spotlight he stole this past weekend.

Kayne West is back, or should I say hasn’t left the news recently, ever since his brilliant act on MTV’s Video Music Awards this past Sunday. You know, of course. The whole Kayne West and Taylor Swift ordeal. All West’s senseless, insulting, and in my opinion disgusting demonstration of his true self. Rude, rude, rude Kayne West.

The latest on the rapping egomaniac is that his little “stunt” on stage might actually have been just that, an act, as reported by Pop Eater.

Honestly, it was the first thought to pop into my mind while watching the live performance. I mean, there wasn’t a whole lot else that was “lively” about the live show. I was bored out of my mind, just like the entire audience seemed for the portion of the show following the very beginning, after Madonna’s speech and Janet’s performance, both in honor of the true dead King of Pop.

So, perhaps, this was indeed a staged act, meant to garner some real attention, though highly negative as it was. I think I heard all of four “boos” while the thieving was going on. And if it was truly a staged event purposed for that reason, or simply to gain any attention whatsoever, I guess it worked, now that every media outlet and their mothers are covering the incident.

But then again, in reviewing some past Kayne Mess, ahem, West incidents, performances or whatever you’d like to refer to them as, I somehow doubt that theory.

Mr. West was once quoted as saying something along the lines of — since I’m pulling from memory and can’t find the exact wording — ‘The only thing in life I will regret is not being able to watch myself live in concert.’

Wow. Besides making you want to double over and laugh until your breakfast, brunch and lunch come spewing out of your mouth from sheer disbelief, awe and an otherwise dumbfounded “WTF” moment, can anyone say ego?

I think West has enough to share with the six-plus billion on our planet right now, though I doubt he’s willing to give any up.

No matter what these media mongrels are saying, I don’t think the act was staged. Just look at this guy’s ego’s record to see for yourself. (Yeah, its got its own record, and mugshot, if you really must know.) If that last quote, excuse me, unquote, didn’t give it away, what else do you need? The man’s all about himself and obviously believes he can do anything.

Well, he’s certainly provided the world with one more pointless story to cover as “news,” as I’m sure Kayne’s big mouth will continue to do in the future. I just hope this one doesn’t last as long as the true King of Pop’s, may he rest in peace, finally.

If the man was stranded on a desert island, I can just hear his only request: A mirror.

Honestly, Florida. When are you going to stop turning out (no pun intended) people like this?

That’s exactly the first thought that came to my mind after reading the latest news story about the latest teacher turned latest sex fiend…oh, I’m sorry, porn star. Oh yes, and not to mention, how many times am I going to read about a woman like this in Florida? (Seriously though. What’s up with this trend? Anyone?)

Maybe we should have taken the hint last fall when Ms. (formerly) Tiffany Shepherd was fired from her teaching job at Florida’s Port St. Lucie High School after pictures of her were discovered on the Web “moonlighting as a bikini mate on Smokin’ Em charters fishing tours,” according to Associated Content News.

Shepherd is now known as Leah Lust and has officially become a porn star. (Official as in just try searching for Leah Lust video, Leah Lust Secret Agent, or Tiffany Shepherd video on your favorite search engine to see what pops up.)

It may NOT also come as a surprise that the newly dubbed Ms. Leah Lust often stars in her films (if you can even call them that) as a teacher or “wife next door” type.

And what does the latest Florida teacher turned porn star have to say about all of this? You may (or may not, as in my case because nothing people today do or say anymore shocks me, sadly) be surprised.

“I’m not particularly proud of it. To be honest, I hate it,” said Shepherd (aka Leah Lust) to Page 2 Live. “I’m an educated woman, but I never though it would come to this. No one gets brought up thinking they’ll be a floozy.”

Lust says that since being fired, she has been unable to another form of employment, well, besides the porn-related jobs. She even claims that she’s sent out 2,500 resumes…to no avail.

How, then, is Ms. Lust supposed to afford taking care of one of her three children? I’m sorry, allow me clarify. Shepherd lost custody of two of her three children. (Wow. Such a shocker, I know. This story’s full of that…)

Though she won’t say exactly how much she makes, I think we all know that girls who work in the porn industry, at least the ones in front of the camera taking off their clothes, make a decent amount of money. Somewhere around $5,000 a scene, to be exact. I think I could live off of that for a while…a scene?!

Gee, I wonder why no one wants to hire this woman. And what types of jobs are on her application list? I don’t think the childcare center is going to call back, or the elementary school, or the… Yeah.

So what should we take away from this most momentous news event ladies and gentleman? Should we feel sorry for a woman struggling to support three children on the measly monetary earnings of a schoolteacher who just so happened to turn to the porn industry for support in a time of need? Or should we look at this as a woman taking the easy road (again, no pun intended) out of a constricting financial situation that perhaps better life choices would have avoided anyway?

When we turn on the TV and watch Law and Order, or any of its other spin-offs, we are all treated to this display of legal action where they always seem to be aiming to get the guy and somehow get the job done most of the time by grasping at straws until everything makes sense. It’s a win for the good guys, and in the rare cases where an innocent person is prosecuted, things seem to work out so that everyone ends up happy.

The fiction in the show does well to describe what hardships exist in our legal system, but it does an even better job at attempting to display how our legal system should work. It should make every attempt to get the bad guy and make sure justice is served. It should make every attempt at uncovering the whole truth before presenting the case before the judge. It should make the attempt at discerning whether the defendant is actually guilty, or if he or she is innocent.

How often those actions are omitted.

We are treated to the spectacle of ‘law’ in this country similar to public hearings during the Salem Witch Trials, only without the dunking booth and a bit less fervor. There have been a few noteworthy cases that clearly show certain DA’s office’s prosecution playing political games and playing the crowd, while looking at their moral and ethical fiber and stuffing them into a dark drawer while they go out and attempt to bring ‘justice’ to the offender.

The boys from Duke’s lacrosse team were all harmed by the actions of one such prosecutor. The team had a season canceled, and many had their lives put on hold while the case played out. Then came information that the prosecution willingly omitted evidence that would have weakened their case by showing the innocence of players, as well as withholding information that must be shared with the defendants. All because the DA was elected on the basis of fighting for civil rights and equal prosecution in the courts.

So instead of equally trying to prosecute the whites and blacks that were caught in the act and guilty, the judge singled out a group of affluent white boys to try and make a statement, and guilt be damned.

Then, there again, is the Kobe Bryant fiasco in Colorado, with his accuser being well known for her feminine wiles and getting a taste of the town at a dinner table made of pillows and sheets. She was an up and up gold digger looking to cash in on her score with basketball’s hottest closer. Even when DNA evidence in her rape kit showed her not only to have slept with Bryant, but another man hours later, or when she changed her story about as often as a traffic light switches colors, the prosecution scrambled to ‘protect this victim’ by not taking a look at the evidence in hand and saying they didn’t have a case.

The only reason these cases went as far as they did was because the targets of both were either public figures or represented a political goal. Politics and law should never, ever be mixed together. Sheriff’s, DA’s, and other elected officials within the legal system should not be allowed to cater to a crowd and play the games politicians do, because often those political aspirations go far beyond any commitment to do what is right.

If you’re like most other people in America, you’re living budget is decreasing as the days go by. Here are a few tips for making your money last without having to completely sacrifice the things you enjoy.

1. Learn how to cook/bake at home- That $50 meal could have bought your groceries for a few days. I’m sure your cooking isn’t that bad.
2. Get off your high horse- This is for all of you who enjoy “the finer things in life.” There off-brands for a reason. Maybe you could afford the expensive, “superior” brands at one time, but if you can’t anymore, stop kidding yourself.
3. Plan ahead- Grab some paper and a pen. Now, before you go out on your day of errands, write out exactly what you need and where you need to go. Once that’s done, think about the locations of everything. Plan where you’ll go in accordance to that.
4. Find the scissors- This goes along with the high horse. If you need to use coupons, use them. That’s why they’re there. There’s nothing wrong with it and if done right, it can save you lots of money.

5. Buy used- I’ll agree, there are some things that you don’t want to buy used. Still, that leaves lots of other things that you can buy used, like furniture, clothing, purses and electronics. Check out thrift stores, Goodwill and Craigslist.
6. Invest in necessities- We all have our vices. For many Americans, coffee is something we cannot live without on a daily basis. You can find affordable coffee makers and everything you need to make your morning coffee, at home, for much cheaper than what you’re paying now. You’ll be surprised at how much you’ll save.
7. Share with friends- It’s nice to have good friends, it’s even nicer to have friends who like to share. Everyone has something to share, whether it be a talent, money or some product. If your friend knows how to cook and you don’t, ask her to teach you. In exchange, you can let her borrow a few of your books or tools or something. It can be just like the good ole days with bartering.
8. Find other hobbies- You might think that your hobby is going to Home Depot and spending $200 on tools, or you might think that your hobby is getting a manicure for $75. I’m sure you enjoy those things immensely, but there are better, more cost efficient ways to spend your time.
9. Have a garage sale- Everyone has extra stuff around the house that is never used. There’s really no reason to keep it. (Unless it has some sentimental value, if so then it’s excused.) It’s not as difficult as you think to just gather it up, put a sign in your yard and let people buy it from you. It won’t be as painful as you think either… especially after you begin to reap the reward ($$$).
10. Teach your children- It can be hard to tell your precious little child “No,” but sometimes you have to. It’s even more difficult when they’re used to getting what they want most of the time. Now’s the time to start some new habits of teaching your children to work for their money and teaching you to tell them “No.”

A baby is born every six seconds in the United States. Just minutes after the umbilical chord is severed and the thick coating of amniotic fluid is wiped from their red and purple splotched skin, these infants are given their very first shot, a vaccine for hepatitis B.

It’s true that immunizations like this one have saved thousands of lives since the very first mass inoculations just after World War II, but a growing concern regarding the possible side effects of new vaccines like hepatitis B has mounted in recent years. Many parents are convinced that there may be a link between thimerosal, the mercury-based preservative found in some vaccines, and autism. This has led to a nationwide rise in unvaccinated children.

Though the federal government and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have denied any scientific correlation between vaccines and autism, Dr. Mady Hornig, from the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, and other critics point to evidence that suggests otherwise. One such statistic, and probably the biggest motivating factor in why many new parents are reconsidering immunizing their children, is that autism cases have increased substantially in past few decades. One in 10,000 children developed autism in the 1970s, whereas today, as many as one in 150 children develop the disorder, according to a Web site provided by Vaccine Awareness of North Florida.

Hornig’s research involved injecting a group of mice with tissues similar to those found in children with mercury-laden vaccines equivalent to the doses children received in the 1990s. The mice developed serious brain problems.

“I’ve decided not to have my child vaccinated for anything yet. I just keep hearing about this risk and that risk…it’s scary. I just don’t know enough about them,” said Holly Baker, mother to a 4 and half-month-old baby girl.

Thirty years ago, this was barely a concern for parents.

“When I was pregnant with my first child, I had never even heard of autism. We were mostly concerned with major birth defects…things like that,” said Sue Murphy, mother of four children born in the ‘70s.

According to the CDC, thimerosal has been used in many vaccines since the 1930s and no convincing scientific evidence of harm caused by the low doses of this mercury-containing compound has ever been documented. However, in July 1999, the Public Health Service agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics and vaccine manufacturers agreed that thimerosal should be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure.

Parents have the option to choose vaccines that do not contain thimerosal, but they have to know about the option before they can ask for it.

“My pediatrician has a poster on the wall in the waiting room that lists the vaccines that contain mercury and the ones that don’t,” Baker said. “The pediatrician I had for my first child didn’t do this. There’s no way I would have known otherwise.”

Choosing not to have children vaccinated, however, isn’t easy. All public schools require proof of immunizations for admittance, though parents can apply for an exemption. Depending on the state, exemptions can include medical, religious, and philosophical objections. The majority of these fall into the religious category. Since many states do not require parents to expand on the specific religious practice that clashes with the vaccination, some parents may use this exemption to simply circumvent the system.

International travel also presents an issue. Children and adults alike are required to have proof of immunizations in order to obtain a passport and travel to foreign countries. Very few, if any, exemptions apply here.

There are also concerns for those who choose not to have children vaccinated.

According to pediatrician Dr. Karena Neri, unimmunized children are more likely to get vaccine-preventable diseases if there is an outbreak than those who have been immunized. If an unimmunized child gets a vaccine-preventable disease, he or she is likely to spread that disease to another unimmunized child.

Reported cases of the measles, a disease that has been almost completely eradicated since the vaccine was first administered in the 1960s, have more than doubled in 2008.

“Vaccines like the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) are good because they help prevent dangerous diseases. If someone were to contract the measles, the chance for brain damage alone is 50 percent,” Neri said.

Other vaccines, such as those for chicken pox, might not be such a good idea, as Neri pointed out. When a child contracts chicken pox, his or her body builds immunities to the virus that will provide protection for life. If a child is vaccinated for chicken pox, he or she must come back every 10 years for a booster shot. If the booster is forgotten, the person runs the risk of contracting the disease and health risks associated with the
chicken pox for adults are much greater than for children.

“The benefits for getting children immunized far, far outweigh the potential risks,” Neri said. “As a general rule, parents should have their children vaccinated.”

Change has followed the passing of recent years, and with it, the idea of immunizing children.

“When women my age were having children, the grandmothers would describe the symptoms and the deaths of children who weren’t vaccinated,” Murphy said. “We all immunized our children. Today, it’s just different.”

It was about nine months ago when news of a massive magnetic machine that many were convinced would be the end of our planet began to make many, many headlines. This machine is known as the LHC or Large Hadron Collider and was scheduled for its highly anticipated, and also highly dreaded, green for “go” light in September of last year.

With as much controversy and attention that the turning on of the LHC received, it’s a wonder how almost a full year later most people don’t even know what happened to it. So what did happen to the LHC? It obviously didn’t rip the world in half, kill a large percentage of the population via cosmic rays, or serve Earth a similar fate to that of Vulcan in the latest Star Trek film by creating a black hole that would suck us all into a place only theory can imagine.

Before we delve into the latest information, I think it might be best to freshen up our knowledge on this most important scientific device, potentially the most important ever created.

The LHC is the largest and most powerful particle accelerator on the planet. It is made up of a 16.7-mile ring of superconducting magnets that along with a few other particle accelerating structures, will propel protons to collide with one another at 30 million times per second. Each collision will spew thousands of particles at nearly the speed of light.

The LHC was designed to recreate conditions that occurred after the supposed Big Bang. The main idea is that the experiment could possibly unlock some of the biggest keys to the universe, such as what it’s made up of, what makes it expand and what may lie ahead for the cosmos in the future.

The biggest concerns surrounding the LHC regarded the possible formation of tiny black holes and the creation of hazardous cosmic rays.

Black holes, of course, are formed naturally when certain stars collapse, concentrating a massive amount of matter in a very small space. If you’ve seen any space movies that feature one of these mega monsters of space and matter, you’re familiar with the disastrous affects one can yield. They’re like the biggest vacuums in existence, for lack of a better comparison.

Backed by the properties of gravity established by Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, some scientists believe that it would be impossible for the LHC to form any sort of black holes. Others cite the fact that no one really knows for sure what will happen when the LHC turns on, that the high velocity these particles will be traveling at could cause a lot more than just the formation of black holes.

The other worry is about cosmic rays, or forms of ultra-high radiation. It’s true that particle accelerators recreate the natural phenomenon of cosmic rays. It’s also true that when these rays are created, they are under controlled laboratory conditions.

In an article from the U.K.’s Telegraph online, Stephen Hawking, the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge said, “The world will not come to an end when the LHC turns on. The LHC is absolutely safe.”

Is this true? Should we trust arguably one of the most intelligent people on the planet with a question of indefinable science on the fate of the globe?

Before you decide for yourself, let’s take a look at some more pros to the LHC.

Not only could turning this thing on provide some of the most important answers to some of the most allusive questions ever thought, but it could prolong the existence of the human race on earth. According to Dr. Hawking, turning on the LHC is “vital if the human race is not to stultify and eventually die out.”

Probably the most controversial aspect of the LHC is the idea that it may help us identify what is known as the Higgs boson particle, or God particle. It is theorized that this particle can create matter. Its discovery would help solidify the Big Bang theory and help us understand more about the origin of the universe.

So what’s happened to the LHC? The LHC was actually turned on as scheduled. Unfortunately, an unanticipated liquid helium leak occurred that has extended the new start date to some time this summer or early fall as repairs continue.

So now that you have both sides of this most controversial and important global event (really), you can decide for yourself as to how you feel about it, not that it will make much of a difference considering that the machine will be turned on at some point.

Something I want to make sure that you keep in mind, however, when considering this is that in all the research I’ve done on this topic and all the people I’ve talked to, not one was certain about what would happen when the LHC is turned on. The fact of the matter is that there is such limited knowledge on the facts and figures of our universe and what happens when particles collide at astronomical speeds that we cannot know for sure if it will mean the end of life on earth as we know it, or whether it will send all of our current technology thousands of years in the future in an instant. We can only wonder and wait to find out.

In honor of the most unbearably hot season of the year, we can welcome many things. Summer brings an excuse to go on vacation, take a few extra trips to the beach, drink margaritas and wear that new swim suit. We’re also welcomed with tons of new summer blockbusters, summer music tours and music festivals.

To many, the thought of attending an outside music festival in the middle of the summer is borderline unbearable. For those that don’t mind traveling, aren’t opposed to profuse sweating and love music, here are a few options for you.

1.	Bonnaroo
What to expect: Bonnaroo is a four-day music festival extravaganza. When you buy your ticket, you may as well be purchasing a camping spot (because you’re expected to camp out there.) The concerts can begin as early as noon and as late as midnight. The more established artists tend to play later in the day. Also, expect to see some illegal drug action, smell some nasty scents and hear some awesome music.
Dates: June 11-14
Location: Manchester, Tennessee
Featured Artists: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Phish, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Paul Oakenfold, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Public Enemy, Girl Talk, The Decemberists and of Montreal, just to name a few.
Cost: Tickets start at around $224.50. Once those run out, prices increase to $234.50…then $249.50. Of course let’s not forget about the “applicable taxes and fees,” which add up to an additional $23.10 per ticket.

2.	Sasquatch Music Festival
What to expect: Think of the hippies from Bonnaroo mixed with a few more tattooed indie rockers. It’s in the midst of beautiful landscape and has been praised as one of the better organized music festivals in the U.S.
Dates: May 23-25
Location: Quincy, Washington
Featured Artists: Kings of Leon, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Animal Collective, Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, the Silverspun Pickups, and many more.
Cost: Tickets are $66.50 until the week of the festival. On May 18 tickets increase in price to $76.50. If you’re planning on camping there, you can purchase a weekend camping pass for $160.

3.	Wakarusa
What to expect: As always, expect the hippies. What’s really cool about this one is that they have planned activities, including a costume contest, morning yoga, disc golf, hiking and kayaking.
Dates: June 4-7
Location: Ozark, Arkansas
Featured Artists: Gov’t Mule, Matisyahu, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Buckethead, Sly & Robbie, Lucero, Split Lip Rayfield, Moonalice and more.
Cost: Tickets are $139. Each vehicle must have a camping pass, which costs $79 plus applicable fees.

4.	Essence Music Festival
What to expect: This one is different from the others because it’s not held outside. This year will mark its 15th anniversary. It’s also sponsored by the Essence magazine. An awesome lineup has come to be expected from this venue.
Dates: July 3-5
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Featured Artists: Beyonce, John Legend, Anita Baker, Ne-Yo, En Vogue, Solange, Irvin Mayfield, Keri Hilson, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and many more.
Cost: You have to buy the tickets through Ticketmaster or some other kind of ticketing service so there’s always a service charge for that, but the base price is around $167. The good news is that there’s no camping involved.

5.	Summerfest
What to expect: A lot of sun, people and music.
Dates: June 25- July 5
Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Featured Artists: Puddle of Mud, Rancid, Rise Against, Sara Evans, Lupe Fiasco, Skillet, No Doubt, Paramore, Judas Priest, Gavin DeGraw, The Fray, Flogging Molly and…that’s not even half of them.
Cost: General admission is $15 after 4 p.m. and $8 before. If you get the $8, it only keeps you in until 4.
